Planning For The Future

Sometimes it can be very hard to get motivated to plan for retirement, especially when it’s more than fifteen years away. But whether or not we plan for it, with each new birthday, your retirement age will arrive like a thief in the night if you don’t prepare properly. More importantly the lifestyle you can afford will depend greatly on the choices you make today.

If you have a hard time wrapping your mind around what it will take to plan for a successful retirement, then I suggest you try this: Try and imagine what you want your lifestyle to be when you reach retirement age. Whether you plan to just kick back and spend time with children and grandchildren, hike beautiful mountain ranges, start a small business- maybe doing something you love and thus may be more of a hobby than a business, or simply lounge around the house, your ideal lifestyle is more likely to happen if you appropriately plan ahead than if you don’t.

You may be surprised to hear this, but planning for your retirement isn’t really that difficult, or at least it doesn’t have to be. And actually, if done right, it can be kind of fun.

Normally the first step is a simple conversation with your financial advisor about what you want your ideal retirement lifestyle to be. This will allow your financial advisor to show you what you need to do right now to reach that Ideal Lifestyle.

The next step and in my opinion a crucial one that must not be overlooked, is to address how you manage your spending day in and day out. And after 20 years as a financial advisor I can say with authority that not all financial advisors are equipped to guide clients in this area. But in my opinion it should be one that every advisor pursues because the largest opportunities to build wealth are lost in the way we manage our money daily.

This is why we always begin by helping people get organized with their money and develop the appropriate cash flow strategies to make sure they can enjoy their lifestyle today, while at the same time finding the proper balance with saving and investing so they can reach their Ideal Lifestyle in retirement.

There’s nothing more disheartening for a financial planner to see than someone who has worked their tail off for forty years only to enter their retirement years having to downsize their lifestyle because of a fear of running out of money.
